Lapua Blog: 10 in a row – a news hunting story

Sometimes, the truth can be more amazing than fiction! This news story will surely be passed on to new hunting generations to come.

It was a nice, frosty winter day in December 2016 in Hessian Lahn-Dill in Germany. Local hunters were invited for a year-end-hunt to shoot red deer, wild boars and foxes in the hilly hunting region of Wissenbach-Eibelshausen. The hunt leader gave a welcoming speech and after that, the hunters left for their spots, full of anticipation. One of the hunters was gamekeeper and prestigious dog trainer Martin Koslowski. He had a feeling that the hunter’s patron Saint Hubertus would be on his side that day. It would turn out he was right!

Throughout the day, shots and dogs barking were heard all around the hunting grounds. And Martin Koslowski did indeed have an incredible day; he shot ten wild boars and two foxes in his one spot!

As the news of Martin’s results started going around at the end of the hunt, the other hunters thought it was a joke that somebody had made up. But as the truck loaded with boars pulled up to the meeting place, the rest of the hunting part realized in astonishment that it wasn´t a hoax. It is safe to say that Martin was a very celebrated man that day, and ever since!

The total count of the hunt was 13 wild boars and 2 foxes. All game, boars and foxes, were shot without any dead run. Martin Koslowski uses a Heym SR 30 rifle in caliber 9.3×62 with Lapua Naturalis 16.2 gr. Choosing the caliber for a hunting rifle – part three

As said, rule number one in picking the right caliber is to match the bullet and the game. Another rule is to match the caliber to typical shooting distances. In short, at distances less than 100 meters/yards, you should consider using velocities below 850 m/s (2780 fps) to minimize meat loss. When you extend the shooting distance to mid-range, you should also consider what happens during the bullet’s free flight. Up to 200 m/yds. everything is still quite easy, but a lot happens at the 225-250 m/yds. mark in most hunting calibers. The bullet drop is expanding rapidly, in other words the trajectory changes dramatically.

If you are using modern rifle scopes with ballistic turrets and you have a range finder, everything is still in control, even with slower calibers. But if you shoot without these aides, the flatter trajectory minimizes the effect of errors in range estimations. Mid and long range hunting calibers should have a bit higher velocity. 850-900 m/s (2780-2950 fps) is suitable in most cases. When exceeding this, you also need to put a lot of focus on the typical bullet BC in that caliber.

As mentioned in the previous part of this article, .30 cal. bullets need to have certain weight to achieve decent ballistic coefficiency. In this case, you also need to think about the bullet structure, jacket thickness and other parameters in the case of lead core bullet. Many hunters choose a slightly smaller 6.5 or 7mm bullet diameter because it’s easier to find a bullet with high BC which still expands nicely in long distances. Also keep in mind that every caliber has a certain level of inherent accuracy, in other words certain cartridges are easier to make shoot accurately than others. Like the comparison between 6,5×47 Lapua and 6,5×55 Swedish Mauser; the first one represents modern design and the second one is an old military caliber. Both are very accurate but there is still a clear difference in their inherent accuracy. It is very easy to shoot smaller than 10 mm groups with 6,5×47 Lapua, but to achieve the same with the 6,5×55 you need a bit more precision in your reloading.

To reload or not to reload

That is the last important factor to consider: Are you able to reload your own hunting ammunition or are you going to buy your ammo? You do not need more than one great working cartridge if you choose carefully, but if you don’t pay attention in selecting the caliber and the bullet, you might have lot of unnecessary work ahead. Including time spent tracking a wounded animal. Respect the game!

How does terminal ballistics work?

As mentioned in the first part of this article, terminal ballistics is basically what the bullet does upon impact. Lethality suffers if all aspects involved in the equation aren’t applied properly. One of the most important elements in terminal ballistics is shot placement. What other elements are there?

The challenge (and also a reason for many myths surrounding terminal ballistics) is that we cannot predict the behavior of an expanding bullet with 100 % certainty. It depends on many parameters like the animal’s muscle and bone structure, its’ body size, as well as bullet speed, structure, angle and so on. In this chapter, I will list some basic facts about terminal ballistics.

First, it is not wise to increase the caliber unnecessary. Excessively hard-kicking firearms can easily induce flinching caused by recoil. Shot placement suffers. The first element in terminal ballistic is that the hunter is able to deliver the bullet to vital organs like lungs, liver, heart. The central nervous system is an effective kill shot too, but harder to hit because the target is so small. It is also not wise to shoot through big bones because it can make the bullet behave unpredictably and cause a lot of meat damage. In the worst case scenario, the bullet might not reach vital organs at all.

Stress causes tissue damage. The most unpredictable element is how the tissue behaves when the bullet impacts the animal. Tissue is elastic and living, containing a variable amount of liquid, fascia, sinew and muscle. Due to this complexity, the resistance varies every time a bullet hits it, even if being shot with the same bullet. And resistance is what makes the hunting bullet expand. So if the bullet is not well-designed and of high quality, then what should be expansion becomes fragmentation, and the penetration suffers. A cartridge’s power, bullet mass, speed, diameter or the case volume help only if the bullet is placed precisely in the vital organs.

But what does that mean? A good example to consider is the heart shot, often perceived as an instantly deadly shot. However, rupturing the heart does not necessarily ensure a fast kill. It is actually cerebral hemorrhage which makes the heart shot effective. A heart shot kills immediately only if the heart is just at the moment of bullet impact pumping blood out to the veins. The suddenly increasing blood pressure causes small hemorrhages all over the brain and that kills the animal immediately.

There are different kinds of tissue. An animal is not a homogenous pile of tissue. Every animal has muscle, bones and organs in a certain combination. The hunter needs to understand how different types of tissue affect bullet penetration and expansion. More important is to understand that the resistance of tissue changes when you change one parameter in the ammunition you use. For example, raising the velocity of the bullet sometimes reduces penetration, as the bullet may expand too rapidly.

Wait . . . what? Well, it’s logical and not at all hard to understand. If you hit the surface of water fast with your open palm, what happens? It probably hurts and your hand does not penetrate easily into the water. This happens because the resistance of the water increases due to the impact speed. But what happens if you slowly stick one finger in the water? It penetrates easily, without resistance. It doesn’t make a big splash or remove lots of water, so the stress towards the water is small.

Keep in mind that 50-70 % of tissue consists of water, and compare it to the above example. It gives an understanding of what the hunting bullet’s work consists of and how all the parameters need to be in balance. Sectional density, velocity, bullet weight, construction etc. all come into play.

The permanent wound cavity is not the whole truth. We’ve all studied the bullet wound when skinning the game, typically measuring the entrance and exit wound because it is difficult to measure the wound cavity from fractured organs. However, don’t put all your faith in the entry and exit holes alone. The bullet generates both a permanent and a temporary wound cavity, and in some instances, the temporary cavity might be the more important one. Tissue damage can be caused by bullet deformation. Different bullets expand in different ways. Generally speaking, the bullet which expands well and leaves a small pit in the nose of the bullet causes the best temporary wound cavity.

An ethical kill requires a proper wound cavity. The variations in game size matter. The diameter of the torso, the bone and muscle structure, and the penetration and expansion behavior of the bullet need to match. Too much penetration is not good for a deer, but for bear, insufficient penetration may not even allow the bullet to reach the vital organs.

All bullet characteristics matter. A phenomenon which is typically forgotten is the effect of bullet expansion compared to penetration. Penetration is often ‘guesstimated’ based on sectional density. As said, the bullet expansion can’t be exactly forecasted because of the variation in tissue and shot placement. So, how can the penetration of an expanding bullet be precisely estimated? Well, only by shooting it into ballistic gelatin.

Most of us have read about the exterior ballistics of the bullet and know that the bullet shape and weight affects its flight. A well-designed, accurate bullet needs to have a certain length and adequate weight compared to the diameter, also considering the weight limits in certain calibers.

The same kinds of variables also affect terminal ballistics. A short, large caliber bullet might not penetrate well enough because there is not enough weight in relation to the bullet diameter. Such a bullet is said to have poor Sectional Density (SD). A smaller, but heavy-to-diameter bullet has better lethality. For instance, in Sweden a lot of the moose hunters use the 6.5×55 Swedish Mauser, as the bullet’s SD is better than that of the light-to-diameter .45 bullet, and therefore penetrates far better. This is also a reason for why most of the 6.5mm and 7mm calibers can be a better option than .30 calibers.

Controlled expansion is not a good thing in all cases. One of the most typical big mistakes hunters make is shooting smaller game with ‘controlled expansion’ bullets for big game. Shooting mid-sized game with a bullet designed for big game, it may penetrate too deeply before it starts to expand. This type of bullet is designed to shoot through big game animals, breaking heavy bone if needed. The big game bullet might be too hard for smaller game, failing to expand at all. This may mean a smaller wound channel, and a failure to kill the animal quickly and in a humane manner. Big exit wound might be a sign about too much penetration, especially if the animal has travelled over 100 meters away after being shot. The bullet has to match the game, always, for every type of hunting.

Writer’s Tip: As the jacket of the big game bullet is designed to penetrate hard muscle and thick bones, people typically aim for the shoulder of the animal. I prefer softer bullets and place the shot either in the armpit, just behind the front leg’s backline, or in the high shoulder. Rib is not as thick as leg bones, so with that placement there are no thick bones affecting the work of a bullet. It can penetrate, expand and create a wound cavity to vital organs without any interference. That way I get all out of the bullet’s diameter, weight, speed and expansion. NOTE: Never attempt a shot that is out of your shooting skills’ range!

There are a lot of myths regarding the stopping power of hunting rifles. Firearms technology and ballistics are concepts that have been complicated by the most interesting theories over the past decades. Partially because the issue has been confounded with hype and fancy terminology – and partially because highly complicated terminal ballistics issues have been translated into layman’s terms. 

However, the only thing that actually connects the hunter and the game animal physically is the bullet. The stopping power of a hunting rifle isn’t based only on bullet size, or speed. And certainly not on the cartridge’s calculated power nor the size of the case. Still, we usually make our choice by comparing the charts that show joules or foot-pounds, muzzle velocities and trajectories. But just looking at a single parameter does not give a comprehensive picture about the overall effectiveness of a caliber.

Another thing that complicates the discussion is the way the human mind works. We want power, size and looks even in situations where it doesn’t help. Concepts like ”shock impact”, ”kinetic energy”, ”stopping power” and ”energy transfer” are based on a great many factors, some valid, some questionable. These terms have started to take on a life of their own, because we just love everything big and powerful. Unfortunately, terminal ballistics don’t work that way. No such force exists that would make the target fly from the sheer impact of the bullet like we see in the movies.

With dozens of factors making the decision harder, a hunter should be able to choose the right caliber for his needs. If not by looking at the parameters mentioned earlier, how then?

Choosing the proper bullet for the animal is the key issue. The bullet does all the work, and therefore what it does on impact is the one thing that matters.

Respect the Game

The number one goal for every hunter should be a clean, fast and ethical kill. What does that mean in practice? Unfortunately many hunters today accept the wounded animal travelling some distance before dying. This might be due to the fact that we focus on the wrong things, such as big entrance and exit wounds for easier tracking. The wrong focus can be due to poor bullet selection, a problem that could be avoided before even taking the shot. The reason may also simply be bad shooting, and poor bullet placement. But instead of easier tracking, shouldn’t we try to avoid the need for it? It is a paradox that we put more effort into ensuring easy tracking than ensuring a clean and ethical kill in the first place.

It is vitally important to understand what the actual effectiveness of a hunting rifle is based upon. As mentioned, it comes down to terminal ballistics, i.e. what the bullet does upon impact with the vital organs of a game animal. A good goal is that the animal should be dead 10 seconds after the bullet strikes. This is possible only if the bullet causes enough damage on vital organs. No, there is no shock that shakes the life out of moose or deer. In some respects, it even works in the opposite direction. White tailed deer, for example, often run long distances under the influence of shock. It is a prey species, low enough in the food chain so it has reactions which are geared for furious escapes. The shock is part of the animal’s system; caused by pain and fear, it makes the animal run. The only way to avoid that scenario is to shut down the system before the animal has the possibility to react.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what size of holes the bullet makes in the skin and muscles. Ultimately, it all comes down to respecting the game. A properly chosen bullet that performs as needed, placed precisely within the animals vital organs, ensures a quick, humane and clean kill. This means less meat loss for the hunter, a better return on his investment, and a more rewarding experience in the field.
