Lapua’s True-Range Expanding® (TRX) represents latest step forward in lead-free hunting bullets, combining accuracy, consistency, and highest standards in ballistics and terminal performance. Independent testing in Jakt magazine by Jørund Lien compared the TRX in both 6.5 mm and .30 caliber against other lead-free designs, producing results that underscore the precision engineering behind Lapua’s approach.

The 6.5 mm Lapua TRX lead-free hunting bullet: Record-setting accuracy and velocity

The 6.5 mm 9,7 g / 120 Grain TRX demonstrated the best accuracy of all tested lead-free bullets: In the Bergara B14 Nordic Edition, the 6.5 mm TRX achieved 18 mm average group (2×5 shots) using 48 gr of MRP. With 49 gr Vihtavuori N165 powder, the 6.5 mm TRX achieved 21 mm average group with 2×5 shots. In the Blaser R93, the same load produced an even tighter 14 mm average group using 48 gr of MRP. For comparison, the Barnes TTSX 120 gr averaged 25 mm in the Bergara, while the Norma EcoStrike and Sako Blade each grouped at 21 mm in the Blaser.

Muzzle velocities in the Bergara with a 56 cm barrel ranged from 858 m/s (Barnes TTSX) down to 842 m/s (Sako Blade and Sierra Gameking), with the TRX recording 844 m/s. In the Blaser’s 57,7 cm barrel, the TRX delivered 821 m/s with the same 48 gr MRP load.

Crafted for hunters who demand the highest standards in ballistics and accuracy, the 6.5 mm 7,8 g / 120 gr N583 Lapua TRX True-Range Expanding lead-free hunting projectile delivers unmatched performance with a high Ballistic Coefficient (BC), exceptional accuracy, and a wider hit range.
Upon impact, Lapua TRX® Hunting Bullets offer exceptional terminal performance, unmatched energy transfer, and nearly 100% weight retention with a solid-copper, polymer-tipped design. Whether targeting big game or small to midsized animals, the TRX® delivers deep penetration and controlled “mushrooming” expansion, even at longer distances, ensuring a clean and ethical kill with minimal tracking required.

.30 caliber Lapua TRX: precision and performance in 9,7 g / 150 gr & 10,7 g / 165 gr lead-free hunting bullets

Lapua has also introduced the True-Range Expanding® (TRX) in .30 caliber, offering 9,7 g / 150 gr and 10,7 g / 165 gr lead-free bullets. The 9,7 g / 150 gr design is especially well-suited to .308 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield, combining a favorable ballistic coefficient with reliable accuracy.

The 9,7 g / 150 gr TRX was tested in three different .308 Winchester rifles and two .30-06 rifles, 10,7 g / 165 grs only in .30-06. All loads were developed close to or at maximum charge based on experience with powders for loading homogeneous copper bullets of the same weight. The exception was a new lot of Vihtavuori N150, which gave lower muzzle velocity than N140 in .308 Win.

With 45 grains of Vihtavuori N140, two of the three .308 Win rifles showed the best precision. That all three rifles managed 1 MOA with five shots is proof enough of the 9,7 g / 150 gr TRX’s accuracy.

In .30-06, the 9,7 g / 150 gr TRX produced excellent results: In the Blaser R8, the 150 gr TRX achieved 18 mm average group (2×5 shots) using 61 gr Vihtavuori N560. In the S&L rifle with the 51 gr N550 powder, the .30 caliber 9,7 g / 150 gr TRX achieved 15 mm average group.

The heavier 10,7 g / 165 gr TRX was also tested in .30-06, achieving 19–21 mm averages. While accurate, the 9,7 g / 150 gr version provided higher muzzle velocity.

With the new True-Range Expanding hunting bullets, hunters can expect superior accuracy from shot to shot. The bullet’s consistent design and optimal aerodynamics provide tight groupings and precise impact placement—ideal for both novice and experienced hunters alike. The TRX is a mushrooming bullet and lead-free, meaning minimal meat loss.
Introducing, .30 cal 10.7 g / 165 gr N584 Lapua TRX True-Range Expanding lead-free hunting bullet by Lapua!

Upon impact, the TRX bullet delivers exceptional terminal performance, creating a neat wound channel and reliable mushrooming expansion. Whether targeting big game or smaller animals, the TRX’s consistent energy transfer ensures a clean and ethical kill with minimal tracking required. Its advanced design ensures deep penetration and optimal expansion, even at longer distances, giving hunters the confidence they need in the field.

New packaging label requirements from C.I.P. regarding polygonal barrels

The C.I.P. organization, which decides on the safety and standardization of weapons and cartridges, has decided on a requirement for cartridges loaded with solid bullets harder than lead (e.g. solid copper or brass) to carry a warning on the packaging that they should not be used in polygonal rifled barrels. The C.I.P. organization, which decides on the safety and standardization of weapons and cartridges, has decided on a requirement for cartridges loaded with solid bullets harder than lead (e.g. solid copper or brass) to carry a warning on the packaging that they should not be used in polygonal rifled barrels.

What is a polygonal barrel?

Polygonal rifled barrels do not have traditional sharp lands and grooves. Instead, the bore cross‑section is shaped like a smooth polygon with rounded corners. The interior looks like a rounded polygon rather than a circle with cut grooves.

Polygonal rifled barrels are allowed a slightly narrower free bore area than normal rifling. This can increase the pressure with solid bullets harder than lead bullets, which is why the warning has been deemed appropriate.

In hunting rifles, this rifling is very rare; it is most often used in serial firearms and self-loading pistols (e.g. Glock). However, this rifling can be encountered in old self-loading H&K hunting rifles.

Lapua is placing a warning icon on Naturalis and TRX cartridge and bullet packagings (see lower right corner of packaging in picture below). No changes have been made or will be made to the bullets or cartridges, it is only a new marking to the box printing.

In this blog, Peder shares his process of loading hunting ammunition for the 6.5×47 Lapua with 6.5 mm 7.8 g / 120 gr TRX N583 bullets, from precise measurements at the bench to real-world testing in the field.

Loading Hunting Ammunition for 6.5×47 Lapua

I started by measuring the length of 10 randomly selected 6.5 mm (.264) Lapua TRX bullets and found the average length to be 34.9 mm (1.374”). I calculated the gyroscopic stability (SG) to be 1.43, which is considered marginal. However, I’ve often experienced excellent precision within this SG range.

I aimed for muzzle velocities of around 880–900 m/s (2890–2950 fps), which would ensure reliable expansion and solid terminal performance at ranges well beyond 300 meters / yds. I based my three loads on 36.5 to 38.5 grains of Vihtavuori N150 powder and a 1.5 mm jump.

Experience at the Shooting Range

I often test my hunting ammunition at 300 meters. My Doppler radar can measure out to this distance at most, and if the ammunition performs well at that range in terms of precision and velocity, I feel confident using it for the kind of hunting I do in Europe.

The hottest load produced a muzzle velocity (V0) of 900 m/s and a G7 BC of 0.2, with single-digit velocity spread and a group size of 43.7 mm (0.5 MOA) at 300 meters (328 yards). I chose this load as my hunting load.

I finished off by stress-testing the bullet by shooting it into 10 kg of clay. This resulted in a textbook permanent wound channel with great depth and a perfectly expanded bullet, retaining nearly 100 % of its original weight.

Field Experience

I brought the ammunition on hunts with good chances of harvesting roe deer, fallow deer, and red deer. During the remaining part of the season, I harvested four roe deer and one hare at distances ranging from 120 to 250 meters.

All animals were shot through vital organs, and only one ran about 25 meters—the rest dropped within 0–10 meters. Meat damage was quite moderate, considering the relatively high impact velocities.

Conclusions

The 6.5 mm Lapua TRX projectile is easy to handload for excellent precision and provides a very reasonable balance between strong terminal performance and moderate meat damage. I will continue to use it in the future and can confidently recommend it to others.

P.S. I’ve also loaded the 165-grain TRX bullet for my Blaser R8 in .308 Win. The very first load I tested produced a 9 mm group at 100 meters—equivalent to 0.3 MOA—using 44.0 grains of N150 and a 1.6 mm jump. Not bad… Not bad at all!

The Lapua factory does a great deal of testing, not only to confirm the renowned top quality of the products, but also to confirm velocities and flight trajectories, not to mention fine-tuning products to achieve the best results possible.

The Scenar – a favorite for achieving the tightest groups

The Lapua Scenar bullets are designed to suit top-level shooters who demand superior accuracy in various disciplines at mid-range and long-range rifle matches and bench rest shooting at an international level. Designed as an open tip match bullet with a boat tail, it’s built for stability, consistency, and precision. This competition projectile has a superb track record, and the below results are proof of this!

Test results

Here, we present the most recent top-level test shooting results from our Lapua test facility, done in August 2025. These groups were shot with a .223 Rem and a .338 Lapua Mag cartridge, using Lapua’s .223 Remington case paired with the 4,5 g / 69 gr Scenar-L OTM GB544, and the .338 Lapua Magnum case paired with the 19,4 g / 300 gr Scenar OTM GB528 projectile.

The GB544 set a record-breaking benchmark at Lapua, achieving the smallest group ever shot with any product in our history: an incredible 5 mm / 0.197” group at 300 m/yds.

The 300 grain .338 cal Scenar GB528 also raised the bar, producing the tightest group ever recorded with this bullet: a 10.6 mm / 0.417” group at 300 m/yds.

The fact that these products continue to set new records shows that consistent quality is key for improving shooting performance!

He dominated the competition, earning first place in the Lt. Governor’s Final, the Macdonald Steward Match, and the Long Branch match. In addition to these victories, Green also secured second place in both the President’s match and the Gibson’s match, culminating in a first-place finish in the grand aggregate with an impressive total score of 398.43.

Green’s individual success was complemented by a significant team victory. As a key member of Team USA, he celebrated his victory alongside their win in the prestigious Canadian-Pacific team match. The victorious team was led by Captain Bob Gill and included fellow members Kimberly Rowe, Charles Rowe, Brian Mrnak, Keith Hoverstad, Yvonne Roberts, and Oliver Milanovic. Lapua extends its sincere congratulations to Brandon Green for his outstanding performance and continued dominance on the competitive shooting circuit. His dedication and skill are an inspiration, and we are proud to have him representing Team Lapua.
