The 49th CISM World Shooting Championships were held on 12-20 November 2016 in Doha, Qatar. Quite a few Lapua Team members and sponsored Lapua shooters took part and the results were excellent. Here are the best results:

Pistol shooter Joackim Norberg is one of Lapua’s sponsored shooters. Despite having a hectic schedule, Joackim hade the time to sit down and share his story with us.

How did you get started in shooting sports?

I have always been into sports, from soccer as a kid to badminton, running and snowboarding, to mountain-biking and boxing. But after a serious mountain bike accident 2006 which resulted in a nerve damage in my left shoulder and a more or less completely paralyzed left arm, my sporting activities were very limited. Therefore, in 2008 I started to play golf and in 2009 pistol shooting. And it became clear quite early that both my talent and passion was in pistol shooting, I loved it from day one.

Which are your shooting disciplines?

Internationally within IPC (International Paralympic Committee) Shooting I compete in Sport Pistol, Free Pistol and Air Pistol. These are my main disciplines. Nationally I also compete in Center Fire and Standard Pistol, some Swedish 25m disciplines like Precision, Military Rapid Fire and Field Target in different calibers.

Your top results this season?

Without doubt the Paralympic Silver in Sports Pistol from Rio. Together with my Gold at the 2014 IPC World Championship in the same disciplines that is my greatest accomplishments within pistol sports ever.

I´m also very satisfied with my Gold in Military Rapid Fire (.22) and Silver in Precision (.32) at the Swedish National Championship this summer.     

What is the most challenging thing about your disciplines?

I think all pistol disciplines have their own challenges, even though the routine within the different precision disciplines are similar. That is also why I enjoy Sports Pistol so much, which has both a precision and a rapid part. So, to make it to the finals in Sport Pistol you need to master both the precision and rapid part.

What Lapua ammunition do you use?

Lapua OSP is my favorite for Sport Pistol and Pistol King for Free Pistol.

What is coming up next for you – do you have any main goals for next season?

Within IPC Shooting there is no championship 2017, so next international goal is IPC World Championship 2018 in Korea, which is also the first competition to gain a quota for the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo. So my plan for 2017 is to continue to work on my shooting technique and competition skills at the Swedish Championships and maybe ISCH in Hannover and some other international competition, but especially to “reload” mentally for the WC 2018 and Pralympics 2020.  

Do you have other hobbies outside shooting? What’s your favourite sport?

Outside shooting I´m a hugh fan of soccer, especially my favorite Swedish team Hammarby. I go to all their home games and have seen them play via live streaming on my laptop from pretty much all countries I have visited. I´m also still enjoy playing golf and snowboarding, even though there haven been so much of it for a while.

Team Lapua USA’s Kevin Nevius set a new NRA National Record for High Power Rifle with a perfect score of 200 with 20 x’s at 600 yards – 20 shots (Prone-Any Sight). For this milestone accomplishment, Nevius was using 6.5 x 47 Lapua, 136 gr. Scenar-L OTM bullets, and VV N150 powder.

At only 35 years old, IPSC shooter Teemu Rintala has already achieved a whole lot within IPSC disciplines. This arborist from Järvenpää, Finland, has quickly become one of the top IPSC shooters in the world. Here’s his story.

“I began shooting when I got my hunting license in 2007. First it was just practicing for hunting, with a shotgun and a .22lr rifle. But after a couple of years, I found myself training semi-seriously in IPSC pistol.

In 2010, I started to practice IPSC rifle, and year later IPSC shotgun. At the same time I also started practicing SRA (Finnish reservists 3-gun). My main discipline today is IPSC Rifle in open division but I also shoot IPSC Shotgun, IPSC Mini Rifle and SRA. I’m using mostly reloaded ammo. 51gr CEHP and 69gr Scenar-L bullets, Vihtavuori powders and Lapua Match brass.

With MiniRifle (22LR) I’m using SK Rifle Match for training and Lapua Midas + for competition.

This year was a good competition year for me: I won the Nordic Championship in IPSC rifle and I also won the WCRO-JP challenge, which is the biggest rifle match in Europe this year. I try to constantly develop my shooting skills, and I want to continuously improve. My main goal for next year is Rifle World Shoot in Russia. And to be the best in the world!

When I’m not practicing my shooting skills, I like to drive old motorcycles, and I enjoy fixing them up. I have a Triumph Tiger 650 -71, and a K-750 -64, sidecar. Wish I had more time for those.

The biggest challenge in IPSC Rifle is that there are so many different things to learn. It’s not enough that you are fast, or you are accurate. You have to be both at the same time, and there is the beauty of the practical shooting.”

The ISSF World Cup for pistol and rifle disciplines wrapped up for this year with the Finals in Bologna, Italy. Lapua Team members and sponsored shooters performed amazingly once again!

In 25 m rapid fire pistol, the gold went to – no surprise here – Lapua Team’s Christian Reitz (GER)! Christian landed gold with a score of 34 hits, followed by Li Yuehong (CHN) with 31 hits and Alexei Klimov (RUS) in third with 26 hits.

In the 10 m air rifle (men) event, Lapua Team’s Peter Sidi (HUN) claimed the gold medal with a great 10.8 last shot and a total score of 207.7 points. Vladimir Maslennikov (RUS) came in 2nd place with 207.2 points and Hossein Bagheri (IRA) came in third with 186.1 points. Lapua sponored shooter Peni Istvan (HUN) finished in 9th. 

In the 50m Rifle Prone Men event, Lapua sponsored shooter Torben Grimmel (DEN) claimed the silver medal, beaten only by Michael McPhail (USA). Matthew Emmons (USA) finished in third. 

In the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men event, Lapua sponsored shooter Gernot Rumpler (AUT) came in 5th place.  In the women’s 25 m pistol event sponsored shooter Heidi Diethelm-Gerber (SUI) finished in 10th place.

Karl Olsson (SWE) took gold in the 3 Pos Men event, followed by Steffen H. Olsen (DEN) and Lapua Team’s Peter Sidi (HUN). Marina Schnider (SUI) won the women’s event, with Anzela Voronova (EST) as second and Sina Oleane Busk (NOR) as third. This year Lapua Team’s Charlotte Jakobsen (DEN) had to step down from the podium to fourth overall.

300 m Rifle Prone men had familiar names on top: Harald Steenvag (NOR) won, Peter Sidi (HUN) took silver and Rajmond Debevec (SLO) bronze.

Marina Schnider (SUI) got silver in 300 m Rifle Prone Women to go with her gold from the previous event. Olivia Goberville (FRA) won the competition with Lisa Muller (GER) finishing third.

The Super Final winner is Gernot Rumpler (AUT), followed by Ljudmilla Kortshagina (EST) and Rajmond Debevec (SLO).

The Texas State High Power Rifle Silhouette Championships were conducted last weekend at the HOTSA gun club in Coolidge, Texas. Lapua sponsored the event with prizes.
