Lapua is proud to offer a new Open Tip (OT) bullet for target sports and hunting practice: introducing the extremely accurate G580 .30 cal 6,5 g / 100 gr Open Tip projectile.

This bullet is perfect for various Nordic target shooting disciplines such as Running Moose, Moose Biathlon, and Scandinavian Silhouette-type shooting like JaktFelt. The G580 has been designed without a cutting edge to better suit electronic targets, which are becoming more and more popular.

“The world is changing. The increasing use of electronic targets will contribute to the development of various shooting disciplines, and accuracy will rise to a new level on the score boards. Lapua is an active player in this change and with this offering we challenge the new target devices, the quality of firearms as well as the shooters‘ skills”, comments Erkki Seikkula, Sales Manager at Lapua.

In the development work and design of this projectile, Lapua set out to challenge old ideas and rethink technological solutions. The bullet shape and core have been redesigned.

Seikkula explains: “Although the external dimensions of the G580 bullet are the same as the existing Lapua G477 Cutting Edge bullet, the new jacket substantially increases structural rigidity. The lead core has been improved in quality and structural development, and its shape has been redesigned. With this, we have been able to optimize the pressure point of the bullet better and more precisely.” The finishing touch to the bullet has been added with a renewed tip shape, which no longer has a cutting edge. With this, bullet BC is consistent, and the tolerances of the bullet tip dimensions are minimized. The bullet is still easy to load, incredibly light and easy to shoot, and its impact offers something completely new for the target shooting market. The .30 cal G580 6,5 g / 100 gr Open Tip bullet is available this summer.

Erik Cortina of Team Lapua has won the 2024 Texas State Long Range Championship for an unprecedented fifth time. Loading Berger 7mm 180 Gr Hybrid Target bullets in his own 7mm PRCW cartridge (formed from Lapua 6.5 PRC cases) Cortina outshot all competitors and scored a 993-51X.

The Texas State Long Range Championship hosted by Bayou Rifles, Inc., took place April 12-14 at the Juliff Rifle and Pistol Range in Rosharon, TX. The TX Long Range Championship hosted the top shooters from around the US, competing in both F-Open and F-TR disciplines.

“This year, the Texas State Long Range Championship adopted the Bisley pair fire format. This format requires shooters to alternate shots rather than string fire. Time limit is 45 seconds per shot. Reading the wind and staying focused is essential, so I decided I was going to ignore my partner’s shots and shoot my own match the entire weekend,” commented Cortina. “It worked out and I secured my 5th TX State Championship with a five point margin. It’s one of the most fun matches I have ever attended.”

The F-Open category has requirements of a rifle weighing no more than 22 pounds and chambered in any caliber .35 and under. Rifles are fired from the prone position with an adjustable front rest and rear sandbag.

Chris Simmons of Team Lapua has brought home back-to-back 2nd place finishes at the Accuracy International Long Range Classic and the Yeti Spring Fling.

The 9th annual Accuracy International Long Range Classic was held at the prestigious ALTUS Shooting Solutions in Baker, FL. The two-day precision rifle competition featured 16 different stages, testing each shooter in distance, movement, barricades and more. Simmons scored a 125 to secure his second place finish and was the stage winner of the 14th stage sponsored by Foundation Stocks.

Following his win, Simmons commented, “The Accuracy International Long Range Classic was a very fun and challenging match testing a vast array of marksmanship skills. We shot traditional position-style stages, unknown distance stages, even a simulated boat stage. My rifle chambered in 6mm BR using Lapua brass, Berger Hybrid Target bullets, and propelled by Vihtavuori powder, shot consistently all weekend long.”

The 2024 Yeti Spring Fling NRL 22X match featured 10 stages with shooters engaging targets from 25 to 300 yards. Held in Somerset, KY on April 13th over 100 competitors battled it out in switchy winds, with Simmons securing another 2nd place finish and the Fastest Wabbit Trophy.

Simmons’ Lapua Act-X .22LR ammunition was matched to his rifle at Lapua’s Rimfire Performance Center. Unique lots of ammunition are tested at 50 and 100 meters simultaneously, identifying the best performing ammunition for purchase. This service is available to any shooter who wishes to gain a competitive advantage. If you are located in the US, schedule your testing at either of Lapua’s Rimfire Performance Centers located in Mesa, AZ, or Marengo, OH. The Lapua Monarch Cup, in its third year, is a two-part series of smallbore standard rifle silhouette matches contested in the USA and either Canada or Mexico. In 2023, the cup featured a three-matches taking place in each participating country, for a total of 6 matches.

“After feedback received from participants from last year, we’re excited to announce a few changes to the match in 2024,” stated Erich Mietenkorte, Lapua Monarch Board Member. “The next evolution of the Lapua Monarch Cup will be two matches instead of three. The board of directors would like the Lapua Monarch Cup to be sustainable and accessible to as many shooters as possible while maintaining matches that are worthy of the prestige that the Lapua Monarch Cup brings. This means more prizes from our amazing sponsors at each match and larger payouts. Plus, less travel obligations.”

The Lapua Monarch Cup is centered around the annual US Smallbore Rifle Silhouette National Championships, with the second hosting country selected through proposal process. Schedule for 2024 is as follows:

  • 1st Match – NRA Smallbore Rifle Silhouette National Championship
    • Ridgway Rifle Club, Ridgway, PA, USA
    • July 28-30, 2024
  • 2nd Match – Lapua Monarch Cup
    • Club De Tiro Saltillo Safari, Saltillo, Coahuila, México
    • October 5-6, 2024

Competitors earn scores from each match within their respective classification (Master, AAA, AA, & A), giving all shooters an opportunity for $25,000 in cash prizes to be distributed within the two countries.

Lapua Monarch Cup Board Members are Erich Mietenkorte, Daniel Salazar, Jason Marsh, Jose (Pepe) Valdes, and Chris Cawthorne. Adam Braverman, Lapua’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, serves as an advisor. For registration information and complete Lapua Monarch Cup details, visit lapuamonarchcup.com.
